Abstract

Blockchain Integration with Building Information Modelling has emerged as one of the most explored applications of blockchain technologies in the AEC industry. The research field has exploded after 2017, with a lot of applications focusing on simple direct securing files with cryptography on blockchains, on automation of direct workflows, on payment activation, and similar, mainly maintaining the current AEC governance and project structure. However blockchain technologies allow possibilities for AEC that are much more sophisticated with the use of Decentralised finance, tokenisation (both fungible and non-fungible), federated and decentralised storage, zero-knowledge proofs and a rethinking of the value proposition that BIM allows. This presentation reviews the current approaches in BIM to blockchain integration, and proposes two kit-of-parts: A blockchain and smart contract kit that would be useful in the AEC industry with the current structure, and a future-proof one, where the governance of the industry is decentralised, i.e takes place on-chain.
