Connected and autonomous vehicles incorporate a range of different technologies, facilitating the safe, efficient movement of people and goods. This will help to improve mobility and productivity, and offer an alternative to driving.

Increasing levels of connectivity will allow vehicles to communicate with their surrounding environment (including the infrastructure and other vehicles). This would provide valuable information for the driver about road, traffic, and weather conditions, and on routing options.

Vehicles with increasing levels of automation will use information from on-board sensors and systems so they can understand their global position and local environment. This would allow them to operate with little or no human input (ie be driverless) for some, or all, of the journey.
