Abstract
In 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto proposed a peer-to-peer (p2p) system - blockchain. It aimed at improving the autonomy of information transactions within a decentralised network to eliminate time and resources needed for institutional authentication. The ‘Satoshi Vision’ (SV) is an approach to blockchain that lowers the operational cost of a block to facilitate micropayments. This approach can be applied to the production pipeline of architectural practices through Building Information Modelling (BIM) systems to streamline the distribution of information, work, and cash to individual actors at micro-scale. This can help local independent and small-scale actors (LISAs) to organise themselves through the network in real-time. Providing connectivity to LISAs can assist in developing a circular economy by building local socio-economic capacity, increase productivity in the industry, and improve cultural sensitivity in design.
This paper first introduces how the support of LISAs can help develop a circular economy in the architectural industry. In the background section, this paper discusses the current state of art of blockchain and BIM coupling, and illustrates how blockchain is coursing towards microeconomy within other industries. In the core study, this paper details the principles of SV, and its potential applications in incentivising the democratisation of blockchain-BIM. In the result section, this paper runs through the proposed SV-BIM production pipeline with case scenarios in Hong Kong. Finally, this paper concludes by recapitulating the premise of its argument and denoting its limitations.
