Abstract
Dating back to 2nd century BC, Ajanta caves are the finest surviving examples of ancient Buddhist art and architecture in India. Over the years paintings and the cave artwork have eroded due to decay and human interference. Though attempts have been made to copy the paintings, some of them have been lost in natural and fire disasters. The remaining are kept in various museums but the information to interpret these paintings or understand the architecture remain largely inaccessible to visitors, even to those who visit the site. To address these problems, our project tries to leverage various digital media technologies for interpretation and representation of the cultural heritage of Ajanta Caves. The process involves digitization and a further embodiment of the digital heritage in a museum space for the public to access. At the museum space, visitor’s engagement and learning are enhanced by exploring various new media practices to create exploratory and interactive experiences.
